Matthew Halsall Norwich Arts Centre
“If I could watch any jazz band in the UK, any, I would choose Matthew Halsall’s band, just love what he’s been doing over the last few years… It’s always high level, spiritual jazz music” Gilles Peterson
Composer, trumpeter, producer, DJ and founder of Gondwana Records, Matthew Halsall has always worn many hats. But at the heart of everything that he does Halsall is first and foremost an artist and a musician. A trumpeter whose soulful playing radiates a thoughtful beauty and a composer and band-leader who has created his own rich sound world of elevating, soulful music, that joins the dots between the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane and the contemporary sounds of Bonobo and The Cinematic Orchestra.

Hosted by the renowned Gilles Peterson, a stalwart of Jazz curation and synonymous with BBC 6Music, this boutique festival unfurls over four days, from August 10-14, creating an immersive celebration of diverse musical genres and shared community experiences.
We Out Here Festival takes its name from the influential 2018 album, which brought together the brightest stars of British jazz such as Nubya Garcia, Ezra Collective, and Moses Boyd. The festival mirrors this innovative spirit, casting a wide net to welcome international artists and homegrown talents, all against the backdrop of Dorset's idyllic parklands. However, the event goes beyond music, expanding into wellness, family-friendly activities, and cultural happenings, all culminating in a well-rounded festival experience.
Year after year, the festival's lineup impresses with its carefully curated selection of both established and emerging artists. In 2023, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy performances from revered acts such as Roisin Murphy, known for her time with Moloko, Brian Jackson, a long-time collaborator of Gil Scott-Heron, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Also gracing the stages will be contemporary stars like Nubya Garcia, Ezra Collective, and Wu Lu, among others.
In addition, festival-goers can soak up summer vibes with DJ sets from Peterson himself, along with other respected names like Jamz Supernova, Mr. Scruff, and LTJ Bukem. But We Out Here is not just about the music. The festival has a strong commitment to high-quality food and drink offerings, arts and cultural programs, crisp sound and production, family activities, and wellness, all complementing its music-led ethos.
Nestled within the lush wooded parkland of Wimborne St Giles, the festival site offers an enchanting setting for unforgettable summer memories. From the seven-acre lake to woodland walks and tucked-away forest pockets, it's a playground for exploration and relaxation.
We Out Here Festival embraces inclusivity and strives to be accessible for all guests. It works closely with the organization Attitude is Everything to ensure a welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of their requirements. In addition, the festival seeks to involve the local community, offering discounted tickets for residents of nearby villages.

So whether you're a jazz aficionado, a dance music enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys the shared energy of a festival, We Out Here provides a unique and inclusive experience for all. As Gilles Peterson himself says,
"I really wanted to bring to the UK a festival that celebrates the elements of UK club culture, and the community that surrounds it, that I have been lucky enough to be a part of over the years."

ALFA MIST
Alfa Mist is a British musician, producer, songwriter and MC based in Newham. His music mixes hip-hop and club tropes with jazz improvisation. He describes his music as ‘Dark, alternative jazz with elements of hip-hop and soul’.
First taught himself to produce beats as a schoolkid in East Ham, London, Alfa then went on to discover jazz through the sampling of hip-hop of producers like Hi-tek, Madlib and J Dilla. Delving deeper, he taught himself the piano by ear as a means to dissect these formative records’ harmonic intricacies, gradually forming his own production style of head-nodding rhythms combined with the immediacy of jazz improvisation, all tied together with a pervasive sense of melody.
“There’s no access to jazz where I’m from,” Alfa says. “There’s no way I would have come to it without finding those hip-hop records and wanting to understand them.”

LTJ Bukem Gonzo's Tea Room
LTJ Bukem
We couldn't resist when we heard that LTJ Bukem wanted to get back in the booth and tear up the place again! Our party in 2022 was one of the highlights of the year and we're expecting this one to be the same!
LTJ Bukem
When the man behind those wire rimmed glasses and that disarming smile writes his job description just what does he put? The man who took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off London's Charing Cross Road to the nation's superclubs and then onto the international stage?
The geezer whose records launched breakbeat into a brand new galaxy of sound? Or maybe he just writes 'Renaissance man for a digital age'. In truth LTJ Bukem is all of the above. Although he wouldn't like to admit it, LTJ Bukem is the living embodiment of the post-acid house entrepreneurial creative spirit. He is a mild mannered energy flash whose panoramic musical vision has found success in every area he has explored.

Not many rappers can boast that their first ever live performance was at London’s O2 Arena, supporting hip hop legend, Nas. Such was the talent of Coops, who at 23-years-old won Choice FM’s Breakthrough Competition, and the chance to perform alongside one of his formative influences. “I want to be inspired by the greats, rather than what’s current,” the North Londoner explains, citing Jay Z, A Tribe Called Quest and Eminem as other major inspirations.
Throughout his late teens Coops was making music with his friends, but it wasn’t until he looked at himself and the world around him that he changed his writing approach and decided to go it alone. “I’ve always had the mind-set that if I’m true to myself and where I am, as a social commentator or looking inside myself documenting that stage of my life, then I’ll have endless material.”
Having already built a strong momentum for himself with several releases under his belt ( ‘What Do You See’ in 2011, ‘Lost Soul’ in 2014 & ‘God Complex’ in 2016), Coops signed to High Focus Records in 2017 and quickly released two critically acclaimed projects in just a year – the introductory ‘No Brainer’ and the full length opus ‘Life In The Flesh’. Returning in 2020 with the existential masterpiece ‘Crimes Against Creation’, Coops questions the current state of hip hop, politics, and the world.
With a truly original and versatile approach to spreading messages in his music, Coops is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
