Nabihah Iqbal: Melancholy, Resilience, and the Journey to 'DREAMER
With her new album 'DREAMER', London-based musician, producer, DJ, and broadcaster Nabihah Iqbal offers listeners a raw, introspective journey through the trials and triumphs that have shaped her as an artist. This long-awaited album, which releases on 28th April 2023, showcases the resilience and creativity of an artist unafraid to explore the depths of her experiences and share them with the world.
In the early months of 2020, Nabihah's world was rocked by a series of unfortunate events, including a burglary at her studio during which all her work was stolen. Already nursing a broken hand and grappling with burnout, she was hit with another blow: her grandfather had suffered a brain haemorrhage. Leaving behind the chaos in London, Nabihah flew to Karachi, Pakistan, where she would spend the global Covid-19 lockdown.
In Pakistan, Nabihah found solace and strength amidst the turmoil. Stripped of her usual tools, she returned to the essence of music, relying on an acoustic guitar and a harmonium. She reconnected with the raw joy of creating music, and this experience is palpably woven into the fabric of 'DREAMER'. The album is a reflection of Nabihah's journey of healing and rediscovery, a testament to her resilience in the face of adversity.
'DREAMER' is a deeply personal project. It explores themes of personal identity and grief, offering an intimate glimpse into Nabihah's life. Despite its overarching melancholic tone, the album is punctuated by bursts of light, showcasing Nabihah's ability to infuse even the most somber melodies with a sense of hope and warmth.
Nabihah's rich career spans various realms of the art world. She has collaborated with prominent artists, composed music for the Turner Prize, and contributed to significant exhibitions and retrospectives. In 2022, she was announced as a guest director for the Brighton Festival 2023, marking a new and exciting chapter in her multifaceted career.
Despite the obstacles she faced, Nabihah remained dedicated to her craft. Her determination saw her through the tumultuous times, and 'DREAMER' stands as a triumphant symbol of her journey. With this album, Nabihah Iqbal invites listeners into her world, sharing an intimate piece of herself through her music.
With a career rooted in both the London and international music scenes, Nabihah's influence is far-reaching. From her radio shows on NTS and various BBC networks to performances at significant venues and festivals around the world, Nabihah's dedication to her craft is evident. 'DREAMER' signals a new era in her career, adding new colours to her already vibrant palette. As she continues to push boundaries and redefine her sound, Nabihah Iqbal remains a significant force in the music industry.
