Artist Spotlight: Matthew Halsall
Matthew Halsall, a trailblazing trumpeter, producer, and composer, has carved a niche in the modern jazz scene by infusing spiritual essence into his compositions. Born in Manchester, his musical journey began in his early teens when he started playing the trumpet. His music is significantly influenced by the likes of Alice and John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and Miles Davis. These jazz greats, along with the spiritual undertones of his upbringing, have shaped Halsall's distinct sound that seamlessly blends meditative aesthetics with a modern jazz touch.
He launched his independent jazz label, Gondwana Records, in 2008, which also saw the release of his debut album "Sending My Love." The label, based in Manchester, serves as a platform for various celebrated artists like Portico Quartet, Hania Rani, GoGo Penguin, and Mammal Hands among others. Through Gondwana Records, Halsall has played a pivotal role in the UK jazz renaissance.
Halsall's works bear a resemblance to renowned jazz artists like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Don Cherry, and Erik Truffaz, which is evident from his trumpet-playing style and the thematic continuity of his compositions.
In recent years, Halsall's album "Salute To The Sun" (2020) marked his return to music after a five-year hiatus primarily focused on his label. His latest work, "An Ever Changing View" (2023), showcases a blend of acoustic electronica, ambient textures, and diverse percussive elements. The album reflects Halsall's experimental edge, portraying a soundscape that intertwines past and present jazz narratives. This evolution in his music continues to enamor audiences, affirming his status as a notable figure in contemporary jazz. His significant influence and continuous innovation in the genre are set to be celebrated with a headline performance at London's Royal Albert Hall in September 2023, marking the release of his ninth album.
