48 Hours in Manchester: Exploring Hidden Gems and Local Favourites

We recently spent two packed days in Manchester exploring some of the city’s most exciting spots. Here’s a look at what we got up to, with some insider tips on where to stay, eat, and relax.

Day 1: Settling in at LEVEN and Exploring Manchester’s Nightlife

For my stay, I chose LEVEN, a design hotel that genuinely lives up to its name. LEVEN, which means “live,” offers spacious, modern rooms that blend luxury and warmth in every detail. The high-end bathroom goods by Grown Alchemist and incredibly comfortable Naturalmat mattresses made it feel like a home away from home.

As someone who values a good night’s sleep, these beds were a dream—literally. I’d wanted to try a Naturalmat for some time as they are renowned for providing a far more comfortable and breathable night’s sleep thanks to their choice of natural fibres, and I can confirm it didn’t disappoint.

After unpacking and freshening up, I headed out for a bite. Just a short walk away, I found Madre, a spot that serves delicious Mexican food and cocktails. It was the perfect start to my culinary tour of the city.

Later, I swung by Matt and Phreds, a lively venue where I made some new friends and shared a few laughs—the night ended with a nightcap back at LEVEN before getting horizontal on the Naturalmat bed of dreams!

Day 2: Morning Coffee, Northern Quarter Adventures, and the Local Food Scene

I woke up refreshed, rolled out the yoga mat for a quick session, took a relaxing bath, and headed downstairs for coffee and pastries. With the Compendia Manchester Guide open on Google Maps, I mapped out a rough plan for the day. I always love to have a bit of structure but also leave space for those serendipitous moments that make each trip unique.

My first stop was Evelyn’s Cafe Bar—the ideal spot to fuel up for a full day of exploring. Afterwards, I popped into Another Heart to Feed for a quick coffee, then checked out The Modernist Gallery and Bookshop before hitting the streets of the Northern Quarter. This area is a treasure trove of independent stores, creative spots, and unique finds. The sun shone as I chilled in Stevenson Square, taking in the lively atmosphere. Highlights from the area included Unitom, Fred Aldous, and Deadstock General Store—each with its unique charm.

I met up with my friend Julian for a pint at Port Street Beer House in the evening. He’s a big foodie, and after chatting about local gems, we decided to check out Medlock Canteen. We booked a table, hopped on Starling bikes, and rode across town to Deansgate. The food, drinks, and interior were all on point, and I even had a nice chat with the head chef, DJ Hutch. After a full day, I was more than ready for some shut-eye. Cheers, Jules!

Day 3: Leisurely Morning and a Liquid Lunch.

I started my last day with a relaxed morning, editing photos in bed and taking my time before heading out. Breakfast was at Pollen Bakery, where I grabbed a coffee and enjoyed a freshly baked pastry before taking a stroll around Mayfield Park. When the rain started, I took cover at Erst for a glass of wine, which turned into an impromptu “liquid lunch.” Just down the road, I discovered KERB, a contemporary wine bar that’s super friendly for wine novices like me.

I ended the day at STRAY Bar with a drink and chat with the lovely owner, Fran, who gave me even more local recommendations. For my last dinner, I treated myself to Maya, a Michelin- listed restaurant next door to LEVEN, before catching the train back to Norwich.
