North Norfolk Guide with Decca Faire & On Running

In Collaboration with On.

Welcome to the North Norfolk Insider Guide, curated by the exceptional Decca Faire, a multi-faceted mixed media artist whose essence is deeply rooted in Norfolk’s rustic beauty. Born in 1998, Decca’s artistry breaks conventional boundaries, blending film, photography, spoken word, and endurance performance. Her profound connection to the North Norfolk coastline reflects in her work, offering more than a guide – it's a narrative of inspiration and introspection amidst serene beaches and winding trails.

Decca’s art, exploring themes of womanhood, isolation, freedom, and endurance, boldly delves into the human spirit. Her endurance feats, such as ultra-marathon running and cold-water swimming, underscore resilience and self-discovery. Through this guide, experience North Norfolk through the lens of an artist who masterfully combines nature's rawness with femininity's complexity, challenging norms of gender and identity. Decca embarked on a solo endurance performance, trekking from Chamonix to Zermatt. This challenging journey symbolises her commitment to pushing artistic and physical boundaries.

“Running is a fundamental part of my life and work as a woman, and as an artist. It gives me strength and resilience and an escape but more than anything is makes me feel free, it makes me feel me.” – Decca Faire

Artist Decca Faire's Insider Guide to North Norfolk

Decca Faire, a distinguished Glasgow School of Art graduate with a first-class degree, and The Walter Scott Award winner at The New Contemporaries Exhibition at The Royal Scottish Academy, shares her top spots in North Norfolk. These places have shaped her journey as an artist and an individual.

Burnham Overy Beach

Site of the houseboat a great friend and artist owns this vessel, I often come out here and set up camp, in the winter I take shelter from the wind. It's a great reading and coffee spot. Easy to access by the sea wall, lovely at low and high tide. Marshes and the surrounding area are very special running and swimming places too.

Stifkey Stores

Local coffee shop, often cycle or run to. Pit stop on shoots, and treat after marsh walks.

Gurneys Fish Shop

Gurneys fishop in Burnham Market is my favourite shop. No walk or expedition to the island is complete without Gurneys Hot Smoked Salmon, I always bring it with me for a delicious post swim snack, full of protein and natural fats.

Norfolk Coffee Peddler

Burnham Overy’s very own coffee shop on wheels, all the coffee is ground by the lovely Sandy and Dave, the coffee is delicious and I always have one after a swim or just wandering down to the creek. I am obsessed with coffee it fuels my engine and gives more power to navigate the landscapes. The Norfolk Coffee pedaler is a wonderful addition to the community, local artists sell their ceramic cups with them too and they also have amazing vegan cakes. They open between spring and autumn most days depending on the weather.

Holkham Park

Favourite place to run. I never do the parkrun as I like to run alone as well as using running as an art practice. I run half marathons especially round Holkham, and sometimes drive and run from one end to the other, its hilly and that's rare in Norfolk, it has huge open plains where the wind tears across making is hard to steer the body, I love this. The lake is spectacular and I feel a huge sense of place here, I learned ride a bike here and have been coming since I was young.

Dead Man's Pool

Natural swimming pool which I use all year round. When there's snow and ice on the ground I'll bring my kinto down and warm myself after. In the summer it's busy with school children and people on holiday but all through the winter I have the pool to myself most days. The site is where two pilots died in the war and locals call the bathing pool, dead man's hole.

Carrier Company

Carrier company clothing is my favorite to wear when I’m out on the marsh, they do fabulous gardening wear too and they are great friends. I love their approach to fashion and how they use such durable fabrics, I have no doubt the pieces will last forever. I have taken their jumpers to the alps and their trousers through knee deep mud. They are a timeless classic.

Scolt Head

My favourite place in the world. Where I swim and run and walk and explore. Where I make and am most happy. I love walking out at low tide and then getting there by boat, I love islands, I am fascinated by them.
